Amount of shot in dual tumbler.

Hi,
I see that you recommended putting 1lb of shot in the tumbler. I just got a dual tumbler and ordered 1lb of shot, so I was wondering if I could split that amount between the two barrels? How does the amount of shot affect the tumble?
Thanks
Judy

Hi Judy!

You'll find that you get a better result using one pound - or nearly one pound of shot in each barrel. You need enough shot for it do it's magic, so-to-speak, and small quantities of it are not as effective and you'll be tumbling for longer periods of time. There's simply not enough of it coming into contact with the items being tumbled to burnish and clean properly.

While the opposite can be true that more shot is sometimes good, you have to be careful and not overload your tumbler. I recommend that you purchase another pound of stainless steel shot for the other barrel to optimize the tumbler use. Using one pound of shot in a 3lb barrel also shortens the time needed to get the job done. Larger barrels need larger quantities of shot to get the same result.

Just one more question
by: Judy

Thanks for your response...Obviously, I'm new to tumbling, so I was hoping you'd answer one more. With the dual tumbler (it's just the inexpensive one from Harbor Freight), do you have to run both barrels at the same time and with the same amount (for balancing)? I was hoping, since I only have one pound of shot right now, that I could run it in just one of the barrels...until I can get more shot.
Thanks!
Judy

Tumbling with dual barrels
by: Stacy

Hi Judy!

Yes, you can run the dual-barrel tumbler with only one tumbler actually full. But leave the empty one in place so the single barrel is not sliding back-and-forth along the rotating bars. I often run mine that way and it works just fine.
